After completing his undergraduate degree in microbiology at the University of Illinois, Ryan continued his education and training in microbiology at the University of Iowa where he obtained his Ph.D.  Ryan currently teaches microbiology at CGCC and works at Oregon Health & Science University as a Postdoctoral Fellow researching virulence mechanisms of Vibrio cholerae.  Ryan lives in Portland where he enjoys biking and volunteering in his community.
